HAGERSTOWN, Md. — As part of its annual Five-Star Hero program, YellaWood® brand pressure treated pine is spotlighting individuals across the country whose service and perseverance have created lasting change in their communities, including Hagerstown resident Kevin Simmers.
A retired narcotics officer, Simmers turned personal tragedy into a mission to help others after losing his daughter, Brooke, to an overdose at age 19. Together with his wife, Dana, he helped establish Brooke’s House, a residential recovery facility dedicated to helping women rebuild their lives and achieve long-term recovery.
What began as a family’s effort to honor their daughter’s memory has grown into a resource that provides support, stability and hope for women working to overcome substance use challenges. Through Brooke’s House, Simmers has helped transform loss into action, creating opportunities for recovery that continue to impact the community.
In recognition of their impact, Five-Star Hero nominees receive a framed American flag and plaque of honor, a certificate of recognition, and a letter from Great Southern Wood Preserving, Inc. CEO Mark Callender.
“We believe Kevin’s journey from personal loss to creating a resource that continues helping women in recovery is a story that speaks to the power of turning tragedy into purpose,” YellaWood officials said.
