GREENCASTLE – The borough of Greencastle will commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a series of events during the Mayor’s Weekend of Unity on Sept. 6-7, fostering remembrance and community spirit.
On Sept. 6, the community will gather for a 9/11 Memorial Walk at 8:30 a.m., starting at Eastern Avenue and proceeding to Baltimore Street, symbolizing the 110 floors (2,071 steps) of the World Trade Center. Led by the Mayor Ben Thomas Jr. and members of the Rescue Hose Company, participants will honor the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel and civilians who climbed and descended the towers to save lives.
The walk will conclude at the Veteran’s Monument and Memorial at Greencastle Police Headquarters, 60 N. Washington St., with a moment of silence and a brief program, including a prayer, around 9 a.m. Those unable to walk the route may join at the memorial.
The weekend encourages acts of kindness, with residents urged to help neighbors, family or those in need and to display the American flag. Local churches are also invited to include 9/11 reflections in their services.
The events honor the 2,996 lives lost in the attacks on New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as well as the thousands injured and those who later died from related illnesses or military service. Greencastle’s commemoration reflects its commitment to unity and remembrance.
On Sept. 20, the Greencastle Police Department will host its annual Fish with a Cop event at the Greencastle Sportsmen’s Farm Lake, organized by Officer Mike Brennan. Residents can contact the police department at 717-597-9506, ext. 244, or visit its Facebook page for details.
