From Africa to backyard: Drawbaugh’s secrets to year-round birdwatching

WAYNESBORO – Jane Drawbaugh shared her knowledge of birds and how to attract them to your yard at a recent Waynesboro College Club meeting.

Drawbaugh, of Waynesboro, offered tips on how to get better enjoyment of birds by “having the right stuff,” including feed and feeders, and a water source, “so they keep coming to your home year round.”

Drawbaugh, a graduate of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing in Hagerstown, began her nursing career at Washington County Hospital (now Meritus Medical Center). When she and her husband, Dr. Edward Drawbaugh, retired, they began to travel, and a trip to Africa with friends who were birders ignited a new interest – birding. They joined the Washington County Bird Club and continue to travel and participate in bird walks around the area.

Drawbaugh said she enjoys watching the birds in her yard as they “come and go all day long. In a half an hour, I may see 20 different species.”

Drawbaugh distributed information on how to “maximize the traffic in your backyard,” which included details about the food birds of all seasons prefer. “Everyone likes to tidy up the garden and cut off all the annuals and perennials in the fall,” she noted. “But don’t – birds love the natural seeds these flowers provide and the cover that perennial grasses provide.

“Birds can lead you anywhere at all in the world,” she added. “You can make it your way of travel.”

About college club

Waynesboro College Club was founded in 1932, with the main objective being the establishment of a scholarship to assist young Waynesboro women with their college education.

Through the years, the goal has been the continuing objective of the club, as each year students are awarded scholarships to the college of their choice. The program now includes both male and female graduates of Waynesboro Area Senior High School. A total of $25,000 in scholarships was awarded to five students at the 91st annual banquet in April.

The club has supported a number of community organizations and various day care centers, as well as Antietam Humane Society, Friends of the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library, Waynesboro Community and Human Services, the American Cancer Society, Renfrew and The Lunch Place.

Membership is limited to graduates of a four-year college, junior college, school of fine arts and anyone having at least 60 credit hours.

Meetings are held in September, November and March and conclude with the annual scholarship banquet. The September meeting featured a presentation on The Lunch Place, and Buttonwood Nature Center Executive Director Tracy Holliday will speak at the Monday, March 9, 2026, meeting, at 7 p.m. in Church of the Apostles, 336 Barnett Ave. For information about joining, contact Nancy Mace, membership chairman, at [email protected]
