Franklin County’s blustery trick-or-treating 2025

WAYNESBORO – A blustery chill swept through Waynesboro on Halloween night, but it did little to dampen the enthusiasm of trick-or-treaters who flooded Main Street and surrounding neighborhoods in search of sweets and scares.

Dozens of families bundled against the wind made their way along the historic thoroughfare, where porch lights glowed amid an array of jack-o’-lanterns, cobweb-draped facades and animated mechanical decorations that startled passersby. Residents in elaborate costumes — from witches and superheroes to friendly ghosts — greeted the crowds with handfuls of candy, transforming quiet homes into festive outposts.

Main Street Inc. anchored the festivities at Main Street Park, where volunteers distributed treats to eager children under strings of orange lights. “It was a real community effort,” said a volunteer, noting the steady stream of visitors from dusk until 8 p.m. “Everyone pitched in to make sure the kids had a memorable night, wind and all.”

Churches across the area joined the holiday cheer, offering safe havens for costumed revelers. At Trinity United Church of Christ, attendees enjoyed not only candy but also complimentary hot dogs and warm drinks to ward off the evening’s bite. Nearby, Calvary Assembly of God Church hosted a trunk-or-treat event in its parking lot, with decorated vehicles lining up to dole out goodies.

Beyond the core of downtown, participation rippled outward. Trinity Apartments buzzed with activity as tenants passed out treats from doorways, while residents at The Hearthstone Retirement Home took turns handing candy to young visitors, sharing stories of Halloweens past. Civic groups like the Owls Club, Eagles Club and VFW Post also opened their doors, contributing bags of sweets alongside other downtown businesses that lined the streets with glowing displays.

The event drew hundreds, with no reports of major incidents despite the gusty conditions. As jack-o’-lanterns flickered into the night, Waynesboro’s Halloween underscored a tradition of neighborly warmth amid autumn’s crisp turn.
