It’s time to go big or go home.
Washington County flag football teams received their postseason assignments on Tuesday to begin play for the second-ever Maryland state championships in two divisions.
Boonsboro leads the way with the second seed in the 2A/1A West, while Smithsburg will be the region’s fourth seed. Both will host the opening rounds
Schools are aligned as Class 2A-1A for smaller schools and 4A-3A for larger schools.
The first round and quarterfinal games will be played on Nov. 4-5 at the home of the top four seeds in each region. Most will be same-day doubleheaders with two lower-seeded teams facing off in the first round with the winner immediately playing the hosts afterwards.
Williamsport was awarded a sixth seed, while Clear Spring is seventh in the 2A/1A field.
North Hagerstown earned an eighth seed in the 4A/3A West, while South will be the 11th seed.
Boonsboro will host and face the winner of Clear Spring vs. 10th-seeded Poolesville in the nightcap for the right to advance. The Warriors were the 2A/1A state runners-up last season.
Smithsburg will play fifth-seed Walkersville for in the quarterfinals. The region only has 11 teams, so there is no 12th seed for Walkersville to play in the first round.
Williamsport travels to play No. 11 Catoctin, with the winner advancing to face third-seed Linganore in the quarterfinals.
On the 4A/3A level, North is in the bracket with No. 1-seed Clarksburg. The Hubs must defeat No. 9 Oakdale for the right to meet the Lancers.
South Hagerstown travels to Frederick to face No. 6 Seneca Valley in the opening round for the right to meet the third-seeded Cadets in the quarterfinals.
The semifinals and championship games will be played on Nov. 7-8 at M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens, who are a sponsor of the girls sport.
North Hagerstown 12, South Hagerstown 6
The Hubs held off the Rebels on Tuesday, despite an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown by Aniyah Freeman in the first half.
Freeman also caught three passes for 38 yards.
Quarterback Kaelynn Kunkle finished with 9 of 17 passing for 91 yards. Trinity Savage had three catches for 51 yards and ran for 40 yards on three carries for South in the loss.
