WAYNESBORO – Residents of The Leland of Laurel Run are returning to their homes today. They were safely evacuated Tuesday morning, July 1, after a fire broke out at the senior living facility on West Main Street, prompting a swift response from local fire departments.
After confirming the fire was out and securing the power, firefighters remained to help staff and residents. No injuries were reported.
Due to a resulting power outage, the Waynesboro Area YMCA served as the emergency evacuation site for the 81 residents and staff. The YMCA continues to operate its summer camps, aquatics and wellness center, but all group exercise classes except spin were cancelled until further notice as space was used to accommodate evacuees.
As the community came together to help the displaced seniors, local leaders are expressing gratitude for the empathy and dedication shown by staff and volunteers during this challenging time.
