Fall preview community ensembles at Cumberland music school

CHAMBERSBURG – The Cumberland Valley School of Music is gearing up for a full fall season with its community ensembles, offering opportunities for musicians of all ages and skill levels. The program, which includes private and group lessons in orchestral and band instruments, piano, voice, guitar, theatrical techniques, music theory, Suzuki piano and strings, also features numerous classes, workshops, camps and performance opportunities for everyone from newborns to senior citizens.

The fall preview lineup kicks off with the Cumberland Valley Chorale, open to all ages, meeting Sundays starting Sept. 7 from 3-5 p.m. under the direction of instructor Dillon Beede. The CVSM String Orchestra, also for all ages, will rehearse Tuesdays from 10/21 to 11/18 from 7-9 p.m., led by Deb Stotelmyer. The CVSM Symphonic Band, another all-ages ensemble, will hold rehearsals Sundays, 1/11, 1/18, and 1/25 from 2-4 p.m., with Tim Gotwald as instructor.

For those aged 50 and older, the New Horizons Music program offers specialized ensembles. The New Horizons Band will meet Thursdays, 9/4-12/18 (off 9/11, 11/27), from 1-2 p.m., directed by Pat McNamee. A new addition, the New Horizons Jazz Band, with dates to be determined, will be led by Dave Wenerd. The New Horizons String Orchestra, for the same age group, will rehearse Wednesdays, 9/17-12/17 (off 10/8, 11/26), from 2-3 p.m., under Cindy Scanzello’s guidance.

Funding for the New Horizons program is provided by the Tschop Foundation. Ensembles will take place in Chambersburg and Greencastle, with a location key available for participants.

CVSM’s extensive offerings include instruction in a wide range of instruments: accordion, baritone, bass, bassoon, cello, clarinet, drum set, euphonium, flute, French horn, guitar, marimba, oboe, organ, piano, saxophone, Suzuki piano, timpani, trombone, trumpet, tuba, viola, violin, voice and xylophone. For more information, interested individuals can contact the school directly.
