WAYNESBORO – Earth Celebration Day and Recycle Fundraiser drew crowds to Buttonwood Nature Center on Saturday, April 26, as the community gathered for a day of environmental awareness, art and fundraising.
The annual event began with a yard sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering visitors a chance to shop for bargains while supporting the center’s programs. The main celebration ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a wide range of activities for all ages.
Attendees visited eco-friendly exhibitors, including local environmental organizations and community groups, who shared information on conservation, recycling and sustainability. Artist vendors and environmental artisans displayed their work, while a student art show highlighted creative talent from area schools.
Live music filled the air from noon to 3 p.m., with Emily Martin and Friends performing for the crowd. Children and families enjoyed a visit from Smokey the Bear, who greeted guests from 11 a.m. to noon, and a special Spring StoryWalk event concluded with a butterfly release at 2 p.m.
Other highlights included the presentation of the Environmental Artistry Award, a bake sale, raffle items and food trucks serving a variety of treats. Paper shredding services were available from 9 a.m. to noon, helping residents dispose of documents securely and sustainably.
Sponsors for Earth Day and the yard sale fundraiser included local businesses and community supporters. Organizers reminded guests to dress for an outdoor event, with a rain location set at Waynesboro Area Middle School if needed.
