QUINCY – While out and about this week I discovered a diner with a unique flare, Mateos Family Restaurant. Located on Anthony Highway just inside Quincy Township, Mateos is a Mexican restaurant with America style influence.
The menu offered up a variety of tacos and burritos made with fresh ingredients while you wait, no processed fast food there. Other options include rice bowls and quesadillas that come made with the ingredients of your choice.
If you’re not in the mood for Mexican, never fear. There are other options available including pasta dishes such as penne alfredo and Cajun surf and turf. For more traditional entrees, Mateos has fried chicken ala vodka, Cajun fish and chips and chipotle honey salmon.

For the sandwich lovers out there, Mateos’ cheesesteak subs are the specialty. Meat options include smoked chicken, cajun chicken and traditional beef steak. Other sandwich choices include sliders and crunch wraps.
For my meal, I chose a shrimp quesadilla for my appetizer, although this could have been a meal for itself. The portion sizes were very generous. For my entrée, I went with the surf and turf burrito with Spanish rice – an excellent selection with steak, shrimp, beans, rice and jalapeño peppers. The burrito was as round as a softball. There was so much meat, veggies and rice inside that I needed two hands just to pick it up.
For some dining patrons, the prices might seem a little high for a small diner, but the portion sizes justify the price, and the food tasted amazing. Mateos offers quality and quantity. And judging by the steady crowd that came through during my visit, I would say others would agree.
Mateos Family Restaurant is located at 7888 Anthony Highway. The restaurant is open Tuesday from 4-8 p.m., and Wednesday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. The diner is closed on Sunday and Monday. There are options for pick-up and dining in with plenty of seating, both booth and tables.
