Dining out: Gem’s Alehouse & Woodfired Kitchen

GREENCASTLE – Looking for that special gem? Well, we’ve got you covered, folks! Greencastle just stepped up and hit another grand slam with Gem’s Alehouse & Woodfired Kitchen. They had only been open 10 days when we popped in for our visit.

Located in the former B-Sides establishment, you’ll be delightfully surprised to find table service and a new menu. “Working out the kinks” is what they modestly said, but I’d say, “Off to a great start!”

You can’t go wrong on a rainy Thursday night with a couple Pennsylvania IPAs and a woodfired kitchen! Comfort is on the menu here. Kate and I were excited to try this new restaurant nestled in beautiful downtown Greencastle. I work in town, so great local food is always a plus. When I heard that co-owner Jeremy Jones was part of this transition, I knew we were in for a treat! Here’s how it went down.

Upon arrival, you’ll walk by old movie posters and memorabilia. Whether it’s before or after eating, we recommend pausing to do some reading. The art is truly a delight! For those B-Sides fans, you now go straight to your seat of choice and wait for table service. The layout is the same, hi-tops in the bar area, bar seats and multi-level booth seating to fit the whole gang. Gem’s was previously a theater and a perfect spot to catch a movie and have popcorn back in the early 1900s.

We were greeted by our waitress, Gracie, who explained to us that this was her first serving position. From our experience you would have never guessed it. She was knowledgeable, personable and offered a good sport. We always let our waitress know what we’re up to, and Gracie didn’t shy away from the challenge.

We kicked it off with New Trails and waters. Never underestimate the power of hydration. Gem’s offers a full bar as well as some cocktails you could write home about. Make sure to ask about the weekly specials! The menu is extensive with starter options, sandwiches, pizza that’s not pizza, desserts and handcrafted creations that will definitely make you want to return to try your second choice.

It was hard to choose, but Kate gave me the go ahead so I went for it. An order of the buffalo cauliflower bites that lasted all the way to the end. Wings? Of course we will try the double-glazed wings! I’m still talking about them to this day. Kate enjoyed a chopped salad that she graciously shared and I must say every bite we took was a treat.

What I was most excited for was the so-called Pizza not Pizza. Let’s just say if you’re a fan of Detroit meets Chicago pizza, then fear not. But seriously, the hot honey bacon jalapeno pizza knocked my socks off. The homemade sauce is my favorite aspect. You can just tell it’s made fresh. The passion for good food is evident. There was no room for dessert on this trip but don’t worry, we will be back!

Keith, the head chef and general manager, came to our table to check on us, which is a genuine effort that is always appreciated. He graciously shared his story of starting in the B-Street kitchen under the tutelage of Jeremy Jones, where he garnered his respect and kindled a close bond.

For fans of B-Sides, I’m sure, like me, you were a little sad when you caught wind of closing, but don’t worry. Based on conversations we overheard around us at neighboring tables, they haven’t missed a beat. Everyone was not only satisfied but excited to try something else on their next visit. I’m sure co-owners, Brian Hissong and Jeremy Jones will be pleased to hear this rave-view!

In short, if you’re looking for a place to take the whole family and find a little something for everyone, then get on over to Gem’s Alehouse in downtown Greencastle. Plenty of on and off-street parking to get you good and close. If you’re up for a stroll, it wouldn’t hurt to park down the way and take in the sights of Greencastle.
