Lance Dewease would have loved to pocket his 124th career win at Port Royal Speedway last weekend and the top prize of $100,000, awarded to the winner of the Bob Weikert Memorial.
The “Fayetteville Flyer” and National Sprint Car Hall of Famer just missed his goals, but hey, back-to-back podium finishes against a loaded 410 Sprints field and a $12,500 check isn’t a bad consolation.
The 59-year-old Dewease showed that he was ready to compete on Saturday, when he posted the third-fastest qualifying time in the 44-car field. He drew the eighth-starting spot in his heat race, but was unfazed, moving up five spots to take third in the 10-lapper. Dewease’s luck turned around when he drew the second position to start the 25-lap feature. From there, he spent the entire race near the front of the pack chasing leader Brent Marks, and eventually settled for second place.
One day later, Dewease was back on the track and once again, he qualified for the feature on the strength of a third-place finish in his heat race. This time Dewease started from the seventh spot and worked his way up to third in the 40-lap main event. Aaron Reutzel, of Clute, Tex., claimed the win and the $100,000 top prize while Anthony Macri landed in second place.
Port Royal also hosted a Limited Late Models feature, which was highlighted by Top 10 finishes from Greencastle’s D.J. Myers (8th) and St. Thomas’ Keith Walls (10th).
Hagerstown Speedway hosted its Memorial Day Tribute on Saturday, and Keith Reed was more than happy to put on a show for the fans. Reed, of Hagerstown, conquered the 15-lap Pure Stocks feature over Dylan Beavers and William Ecton Jr. Hagerstown’s Blake Reed took fourth and was joined in the Top 10 by Fayetteville’s James Speelman (5th) and Greencastle’s Dave Friedrich (8th).
Also at Hagerstown, the Late Model Sportsman and Crate Late Models races included top finishers from drivers from the Local.News1.org coverage area. Greencastle’s Scott Palmer took third in the Late Model Sportsman feature and was chased by Hagerstown’s Wesley Bonebrake, who placed eighth. The Crate Late Models race saw two Greencastle drivers log Top 10 finishes: Cuyler Upperman (4th) and Mason Booze (9th).
Trevor Gach had a night to remember on Friday at McGrewBid MotoPlex. The Chambersburg driver collected wins in both the Winged and Non-Winged 600cc Micros features.
At Williams Grove Speedway, Hagerstown’s Dylan Shatzer rolled to a ninth-place finish in the 305 Sprints, while two other area drivers secured Top 4 finishes in the Limited Stocks B-Main at Lincoln Speedway: Chambersburg’s Malachi Doyle (2nd) and Waynesboro’s Eric Moats (4th).
Path Valley Speedway enjoyed a weekend off from racing for Memorial Day Weekend.
