WAYNESBORO – Weather permitting, construction will start on Monday, March 3, on two roundabout projects in Washington Township on Route 997, both done by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The construction cost is $6,244,217 will take more than two years to complete.
Traffic impacts initially will be minor with much of the work being performed off the roadway. This includes utility relocation, the installation of erosion and sediment controls, stump, brush and tree removal, along with other off-road construction activities. There may be lane shifts and short-term lane restrictions, as needed, during this phase of the project, PennDOT officials noted.
The first roundabout is located at the intersection of Route 2015 (Orchard Road/Tomstown Road) and the second is located just to the north at the future intersection of Route 997 and Washington Township Boulevard.
This project also consists of roadway widening, ADA curb ramps, drainage improvements, stormwater management and new lighting.
Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times, PennDOT officials noted. Traffic along Route 997 will be maintained, with single-lane flagging operations planned for short periods of work.
However, Tomstown Road will be permanently closed between Route 997 and Washington Township Boulevard later this construction season. Orchard Road and Washington Township Boulevard may be detoured for short periods during construction.
Mitchell Knorr Contracting, of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, is the contractor.
