WAYNESBORO, Pa. – One way to increase participation in the wrestling offseason is by hosting a tournament.
The Waynesboro Wrestling Club did just that last weekend, opening the doors of the high school gym to put on a Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association District tourney, a qualifier for the MAWA West Regional Tournament.
All area schools were in attendance, but no team packed the gym with more grapplers than Waynesboro, a squad that crowned nine champions in Jayden Rooney (Open, 158), Chase Mumma (Elite, 171), Brady Byers (Advanced, 171), Freedom Young (Intermediate, 75), Jaxson Wesoloski (Junior, 82), Brixton Hollimon (Junior, 74), Noah Swope (Midget, 62), Elijah Pradhan (Midget, 54) and Luke Swope (Bantam, 44).
Six wrestlers from Chambersburg — Myles Spidell (Midget, 66), Frankie Bryan (Junior, 86), Gabriel Creamer (Intermediate, 120), Grayson Mull (Advanced, 93), Hunter Johnson (Advanced, 115), Isaac Brambley (Advanced, 130) — won district titles.
Greencastle-Antrim (Ethan Allen, Jackson Polifka, Chance Zimmerman) and Hagerstown (Thomas Monn, Paul Ngolle, Nehemias Barrera) each had three champions, while Smithsburg got a title from Jimmy Brashears at 177 pounds in the open division.
The Top 4 placewinners from each bracket advance to the MAWA West Regional Tournament, set to be held on April 18-19 at the Nittany Valley Sports Centre in State College.
Also on the mat last weekend, Waynesboro siblings Aven Beltz (1st place) and Ace Beltz (2nd) were both finalists at the War at the Shore, held in Wildwood, N.J.
