With the AAU Mid-Atlantic District Qualifier just on the horizon, it’s safe to say that the H-Town Rollerz are fully prepared.
The Rollerz, a club track team based in Hagerstown, took on invitationals nearly every weekend in May and piled up plenty of medals along the way.
H-Town kicked off its month of competition at the Catonsville Meet and was led by Jurneé Simms, a girls 11-12 competitor who scored wins in the 100 (14.03), 200 (27.83) and the 400 (1:03.88). Cate Hensley added victories in the girls 15-18 800 (2:45.68) and 1,500 (5:47.99). Khloe Melton (9-10, 100) and Grace Watts (9-10, 400) also posted wins in the girls meet.
The Rollerz were just as successful on the boys’ side, with Jaxon Baugher (8U, 100, 200) and Khanya White (13-14, 200, 400) each posting multiple wins. Others to win events for H-Town included Dru Kennedy (8U, 200), Reymond Blackwell (8U, javelin), Javion Simms (9-10, 400), Delontay Lloyd Smith (9-10, shot put), A’mari Freeman (11-12, 400), and Cole Iseminger (15-18, long jump). Two relay squads — the 8-10 4×400 and 11-12 4×400 — both won their respective races.
The Rollerz continued to impress the following week at Catoctin. Jurneé Simms once again captured a trifecta of wins in the 100 (13.85), 200 (27.81) and 400 (1:04.28), while teammates Watts (400) and Catalina Blackwell (9-10, 100) also were winners. Three girls from Smithsburg Youth Athletics won events at Catoctin: Haleigh Daniels (high jump), Leanna Lovett (shot put), and Micayla McClain (15-18, 800).
H-Town’s boys got a relay win at Catoctin from their 8-10 4×100 squad (1:03.07) and claimed individual event wins from Brysen Tomlinson (15-18, 110 hurdles), White (13-14, 100), Freeman (11-12, 400), Kennedy (8U, 100) and Lloyd Smith (8U, shot put).
The Rollerz saw two athletes — Cate Hensley and Coen Hensley — each win two events at the Clarksburg Coyotes Club Championships. Cate Hensley, competing in the girls 15-18 age division, won the 800 (2:42.23) and 1,500 (5:57.23). Coen Hensley, a boys 15-16 competitor, won both the 800 (2:18.29) and 110 hurdles (20.28). Other event winners for H-Town — which also got 4×400 wins at 11-12 (5:19.53) and 15-16 (4:08.91) — included Baugher (8U, 100), Reymond Blackwell (8U, javelin), Jader “JJ” Rivas (9-10, shot put) and Mason Johnson (13-14, 400).
Finally, the Rollerz capped off the month by hosting a meet of their own at Williamsport High School.
Trinity Savage, who starred for South Hagerstown on the high school scene this spring, scored wins in the girls 15-18 100 (13.19), 200 (27.87) and long jump (17-5.25). Simms had another big day, too, winning the girls 11-12 100 (14.26), 200 (29.59), and 400 (1:07.64). Melton posted victories in the girls 9-10 100 (15.37) and 200 (32.09), while Cate Hensley surged to wins in the girls 15-18 400 (1:11.72) and 1,500 (5:56.33). The Smithsburg girls saw two athletes land on top of the podium: Daniels (9-10, high jump) and Daisy Mitchell (15-18, 800).
The Rollerz boys also put on a show for the home crowd, with Kennedy (8U, 100, 400), Lloyd Smith (9-10, shot put, javelin) and Jameir Simms (15-18, 100, 200) all recording multiple wins. Other event winners for the Rollerz included Baugher (8U, 200), Reymond Blackwell (8U, javelin), Javion Simms (9-10, 400), Ashton Tulloch (9-10, long jump), Jader “JJ” Rivas (9-10, high jump), James McDonald (15-18, 800), and Kareem Walton (15-18, high jump). Omare Lovett, of Smithsburg, won the 80 hurdles in 17.30.
Area athletes will now turn their attention to the AAU Mid-Atlantic District Qualifier at Millersville University on June 12-14.
