The swimming club team from Chambersburg Memorial YMCA had a brilliant day at the Middle Atlantic Junior Championships, held last weekend in Sewell, N.J.
Competing in a field of 67 teams, the Chargers got a third-place showing from their boys. There are plenty of swimmers to thank for this sharp team performance, but perhaps the first handshake should go to Davey Domzalski.
A 10U competitor, Domzalski collected wins in the 50 backstroke (36.02), 100 backstroke (1:18.47), and 200 IM (2:52.50), while adding five other Top 8 finishes in the 100 breaststroke (2nd in 1:35.14), 400 freestyle (3rd in 5:23.21), 50 breaststroke (3rd in 42.92), 200 freestyle (6th in 2:35.24), and 100 freestyle (7th in 1:12.41). With Domzalski leading the charge, Chambersburg notched Top 5 finishes in the 400 freestyle relay (2nd in 5:10.18), 200 medley relay (3rd in 2:37.69), and 200 freestyle relay (4th in 2:22.55).
Nic Detwiler and Reid Boyer also contributed for the Chargers’ 10U boys. Detwiler arrived to the medal stand in the 100 backstroke (3rd in 1:22.43), 400 freestyle (4th in 5:27.12), 200 IM (4th in 2:59.60), and 200 freestyle (7th in 2:37.98). Boyer claimed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:36.59) and fourth in the 50 breaststroke (43.83).
Chambersburg’s boys top performers in 13-14 age division included Brett Boyer (3rd in 1,500 freestyle, 17:32.31) and Micah Ritchie (8th in 100 backstroke, 1:05.85).
On the girls side, the Chargers were led by Callie Cordell, who took eighth in the 13-14 200 backstroke in 2:30.80.
The Middle Atlantic Senior Championships, held in Mercersburg, also drew strong performances from the Chambersburg Chargers. The boys finished sixth out of 53 teams were guided in the pool by Jed Ritchie, who took second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.53), fifth in the 200 IM (2:13.69), and seventh in the 400 IM (4:45.61). Cullen McGraw placed fifth in the 1,500 freestyle (16:39.56) and sixth in the 800 freestyle (8:44.89), while teammate Cristian Pong placed seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:09.67) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (57.47). Ethan White added a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.04.
Chambersburg’s girls were represented at the Senior Championships by Xiomara Del Rosario, who placed eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.73.
The YMCA of Hagerstown Gators have also been active in recent with competition at the Retriever Aquatic Club Sandbox and the Maryland Last Chance.
The Sandbox event saw boys swimmer Oscar Wu, a 15 & Over competitor, win the 100 backstroke in 1:02.65, while also earning medals in the 50 backstroke (3rd in 29.20), 200 backstroke (3rd in 2:20.20), and sixth in the 50 butterfly (27.0).
Hagerstown’s girls were led at the Sandbox by 11-12 swimmer Haley Fuss, who medaled in six events: The 100 butterfly (2nd in 1:19.11), 50 freestyle (3rd in 30.37), 50 butterfly (4th in 33.65), 50 backstroke (5th in 35.39), 100 backstroke (5th in 1:19.66), and 200 backstroke (2:51.88). She was joined in 11-12 competition by Addie Philp (5th in 200 butterfly, 3:05.10; 5th in 400 IM, 6:27.89) and Charlotte Magaha (3rd in 200 breaststroke, 3:15.52). Lizzy Milloway took second in the 13-14 200 breaststroke in 3:05.89.
Milloway also competed at the Maryland Last Chance. There, she landed third-place finishes in the 200 backstroke (3:04.63), 50 breaststroke (40.21), and 100 breaststroke (1:30.08). Her boys teammate, Eli Harsh, posted a win in the 15 & Over 100 freestyle (57.32), while also medaling in the 50 breaststroke (2nd in 34.18), 50 freestyle (3rd in 26.58), and 100 breaststroke (3rd in 1:17.32).
Both Chambersburg and Hagerstown are scheduled to travel to Ocala, Fla. on July 28-Aug. 1 for the YMCA Long Course Championship.
