CHAMBERSBURG – The Chambersburg Driver License Center at 1320 Lincoln Highway E. is experiencing increased activity as Franklin County residents take advantage of PennDOT’s ongoing REAL ID Days. The event, held Monday, May 12, is part of a statewide effort to help Pennsylvanians obtain REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards.
The center is one of 57 locations across Pennsylvania participating in the initiative, which allows residents to secure a REAL ID during special hours when centers are typically closed. Nearly 10,000 REAL IDs have been issued during each of the past four events statewide, reflecting strong public interest.
A REAL ID, while optional, will be required starting May 7 for boarding domestic flights, entering military bases and accessing certain federal facilities. Residents can also use other federally accepted forms of identification, such as a valid passport or military ID, to meet these requirements.
To obtain a REAL ID, applicants must present proof of identity, proof of Social Security number, two proofs of Pennsylvania address and documentation of any legal name changes. The process includes a one-time fee of $30 in addition to regular renewal costs. Applicants who received their first Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID after September 1, 2003, may already have documents on file and can apply online.
The Chambersburg center continues to offer a range of driver and vehicle services, with many transactions available online. PennDOT encourages residents to review requirements and consider whether a REAL ID is necessary for their travel and identification needs.
