WAYNESBORO — About 75 people gathered Sunday evening at Buttonwood Nature Center for its sixth annual Winter Solstice Celebration, a community event marking the longest night of the year with family-friendly activities and seasonal traditions.
Guests warmed themselves by the fire while storyteller Bruce Rowland shared tales celebrating winter and the return of the sun. Children crafted garlands of popcorn and berries to feed local wildlife and made winter-themed art projects.
Fire pits and a free hot chocolate station, supported by Martin’s Grocery Store, offered a cozy setting. Visitors also browsed among local vendors, including The Boro Baking Co., Four Sons Farm, The Native Niche, and artist Christine Lehman, whose paintings drew special attention.
Members of the Tri-State Astronomers club set up telescopes to give attendees a closer look at winter’s night sky, while a handmade lap quilt raffle added an extra touch of holiday excitement.
