WAYNESBORO – Buttonwood Nature Center will present the 34th Earth Celebration Day on Saturday, April 26, with music, a visit from Smokey the Bear, artisans, a student art show and more.
The event will be at Pine Hill Recreation Area from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission is free. The Recycle-Reuse Yard Sale Fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We are thrilled to welcome back our eco-friendly exhibitors and a full slate of activities,” said Jessica Watson, Buttonwood assistant director and event organizer. “And new this year, we are excited to announce a visit from Smokey Bear. Smokey will be here from 11 a.m. to noon.”
A guided StoryWalk® at 2 p.m. will be followed by a butterfly release.
Live music this year features Emily Martin & Friends. Based in the Washington, D.C., region, Martin carries on her family tradition of playing, teaching and performing old time Appalachian traditional music and Irish music on the mandolin, mountain dulcimer, tenor banjo and voice. The band will also perform interactive children’s music during the Earth Day event.
Paper shredding by OSI will be available from 9 a.m.–noon. The annual Environmental Artistry Award will be presented to a local artist whose work celebrates nature. Franklin County Commissioners will issue an Earth Day proclamation.
The Recycle-Reuse Yard Sale Fundraiser includes decorative and functional bird houses, hand-painted by Waynesboro Area Senior High School National Art Honors Society Club students. The bird houses are available for purchase by suggested donation.
“Attendees should bring some cash. In addition to the bird houses, we have great raffle items, a bake sale and a yard sale,” Watson said.
Attendees can have lunch in the park with food trucks, J&M BBQ & Pretzel Stop Cafe.
To date, environmental exhibitors include: Antietam Watershed Association, Conococheague Audubon Society, DCNR Forest Fire Warden, Franklin Co. Planning Dept., Franklin Co. Rock & Mineral Club, Friends of Mont Alto, The Gleaning Project, Renewal by Andersen, Strawberry Hill Foundation, Tree Trekkers, Tri-State Astronomers, WASHS Garden Club, Water Striders and Waynesboro ShadeTree Commission.
Artists and artisans include: Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library, Blood Rose Gettysburg, Burn One Down, The Cosmic Rhythm, The Crafted Glade, Crowned Crane Ceramics, Four Sons Farm, Rockhound’s Retreat and Wildflower Whispers Studio.
Table spaces to sell items in the yard sale are available for $25. Readers may contact Buttonwood to arrange for your table space.
