GREENCASTLE— The Edwin C. Bittner bridge on Walter Avenue will close temporarily during the week of Dec. 8 for maintenance work, weather permitting. Crews with JDI Site Solutions of Aspers, Pa., will complete bridge deck sealing at a bid price of $21,884, paid through the Borough of Greencastle.
The bridge will be closed during daytime working hours. Borough officials expect the work to finish within the week, as long as weather conditions allow.
The Bittner bridge was built in 1988 to replace a one-and-a-half-lane humpback structure over the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. Funding for the 1988 project was shared among Greencastle Borough, Norfolk Southern and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Before PennDOT constructed Antrim Way in 1955, North Carlisle Street and this section of Walter Avenue were part of State Route 11.
Leaf collection continues through Dec. 19
Greencastle’s annual leaf collection program will continue through Dec. 19 if weather permits. Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb and to remove all branches and other debris that can interfere with collection equipment.
Borough offers two hours of free holiday parking
The Borough of Greencastle is offering 2 hours of free parking throughout downtown for the holiday season. Officials said the initiative is intended to support local businesses and make it easier for residents and visitors to shop, dine and enjoy the downtown district.
