BOONSBORO – The end for Loch Raven came quickly.
It was quick and painful.
Let’s say it was an execution by execution.
Boonsboro was at its efficient best on Friday, scoring quickly and often to lock up Loch Raven in a 66-0 victory in the second round of the Maryland Class 1A North Regional.
The Warriors (8-3) scored on their first, third and sixth offensive plays of the night to build a 21-0 with 7:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Parker DeBaugh scored two TDs for Boonsboro as one of eight players to score a touchdown, including the first one the Warriors’ opening offensive snap.
The senior took a handoff, heading left while scraping along the back of the offensive line. He got a block on the edge and sprung a 44-yard sprint to the end zone.
“We got great field position coming out with Jadon King returning that (kickoff) to our (44),” DeBaugh said, “That first play there was an opening and our blockers did real well in their assignments.
“The blocking great and the hole was there and I just hit it. It was Just a normal play, something we rep in practice. It was something we looked to executed and we did. It was just a power play.”
With the victory, Boonsboro advances to state quarterfinals with two schools from each region advancing to the Final Eight. The eight teams will be reseeded to set the matchups, but the Warriors are likely to host SEED next week, which handed them a 29-20 loss on Oct. 16.
Precision and power just overwhelmed Loch Raven on both sides of the ball. The Raiders turned ball over three times – all to Boonsboro’s Jayden Paugh – and were held unofficially to just 62 yards of offense.
“We kind of harped in practice – shutout – and we were able to do that, so that was nice,” said Paugh, who had two interceptions at a fumble recovery to help Boonsboro throw logs to power the runaway train of an offense.
The longest of Boonsboro’s six scoring drives in the first half was 2 minutes, 6 seconds. In fact, four of the others were :40 or less, including two that clocked in at 10 seconds or less.
In all, Boonsboro scored 66 points – nine touchdowns and a field goal – in just 22 plays.
And it all started with DeBaugh’s first run, finish a drive that last one play and 10 seconds.
“That’s a regular power play,” Boonsboro coach Mark Wadel said. “We made a slight adjustment to our formation and moved some stuff around and did some different things and, for whatever reason, it was wide opened. He hit it and took to the house.
“We ran a power play because its’ pretty safe and to get an idea of what they’re doing. When they lined up, myself and the guy on our sidelines each said ‘This has a chance.’ The boys executed at a high level and made it happen.”
It’s pretty rare when the first play of the game is the beginning of the end, but Friday was one of those rare occasions the Raiders.
Touchdown No. 2 came on Loch Raven’s third play. Raiders quarterback Cai Perry fired a pass along the right hash marks, but Paugh – who is also Boonsboro’s top receiver – cut in front of the intended receiver for the interception and 24-yard return for a touchdown.
“We kind of heard their coach say they were trying to get those slants (patterns) in,” Paugh said. “I read the slot receiver on me and I read slant. The quarterback kind of looked me off, so I took my eyes over one receiver and I just broke on the ball. It came right to me.”
Boonsboro was suddenly up 14-0 with 9:58 remaining in the first quarter.
“It was huge. We scored right away and then got the ball back in a hurry and scored,” Wadel said. “It was kind of like last week. We were up 14-0 with 10 minutes to go in the first quarter.”
Boonsboro forced Loch Raven to punt after a three-and-out series. DeBaugh ripped off a 14-yard TD run on the second play of a drive that last 40 second. It was 21-0 with 7:35 left in the quarter.
The Warriors scored again, this time on the second play of the second quarter. It was a 1-yard run by King to end a four-play drive that lasted 2:02. It was now 28-0 Boonsboro at 11:21 before the half.
A shanked punt gave Boonsboro the ball at Loch Raven’s 35. On the second snap, quarterback Blake Main ran a 17-yard keeper up the middle to score. Drive: Two plays in 32 seconds. Score: 35-0 at 9:05 before half.
After Paugh’s second interception, Main hit Elijah Weddle over the middle for a 10-yard TD on the first play. Drive: Five seconds. Score 42-0. Time: 8:50 to halftime.
Boonsboro sputtered a bit and bogged down using a 27-yard field goal by Justin Pazos, who also booted all nine of the Warriors’ extra points. Drive: Six plays for 32 yards in 2:06. Score: 45-0. Time: Still 4:45 until intermission.
The Warriors ended the half with one last score. Another short, partially blocked punt gave Boonsboro the ball at the Raiders 25. Edward Boakye ran three straight carries, the last sweeping in from the 3. Drive: Four plays 25 yards. Score 52-0. Time: 1:04 to halftime.
With the onslaught well in hand, Boonsboro cleared the bench in a second half which was played with a running clock.
Still, the Warriors still scored two more touchdowns to finish off the 66-point win.
The first was on their first play of the second half – a 26-yard run by Brayden Antos. The second score ended the game, which was on a 14-yard run by Joey Macomber, who set it up with a 41-yard burst to start the two-play drive.
“Tonight, Brayden Antos scored a TD and he’s a wide receiver who has never played running back in his life,” Wadel said “He’s a senior and it was his birthday, so we wanted to get him a touchdown and he broke it.
“The last TD was Joey Macomber, who was a running back but is primarily a defender now. He’s a senior as well. We wanted to see if we get him one, too.”
Meanwhile, the only thing DeBaugh, Paugh and the rest of the Warriors were executing was cheering from the sideline.
“What we say is that we only care about one thing … and that’s winning,” DeBaugh said. “We got our (second and third strings) in and they had the opportunity to score as well and it’s great for them. I love to see the other guys get in and get the opportunity to get the ball and do their thing.”
