BOONSBORO, Md. – Boonsboro will host its annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 2, offering a free morning of outdoor fun for children ages 2 to 12 at Hawkins Grove Pond.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon at the fishing pond behind the Boonsboro Library on Potomac Street. Organizers ask families to enter through Shafer Park and use the parking lot beside the Police Department at 241 Potomac St.
Children will fish in two age-based sessions. Participants ages 2 to 8 will register from 8 to 8:30 a.m., followed by fishing from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Those ages 9 to 12 will register from 9:30 to 10 a.m., with fishing scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon.
Families with children in multiple age groups may choose to attend the later session so siblings can fish together.
Fishing poles will be available for children who do not have their own equipment.
Hawkins Grove Pond is designated as a Maryland non-tidal sport fishing pond. Under Maryland Department of Natural Resources regulations, fishing at the site is limited to children ages 16 and younger, adults age 65 and older, and individuals who are handicapped or blind.
The annual derby aims to introduce young participants to fishing while providing a safe and accessible environment for families to enjoy the outdoors.
