Bono, Mastronardi move Smithsburg to 65-45 win over Catoctin, still undefeated

Smithsburg Lady Leopards Basketball

SMITHSBURG – Claire Bono and Skyla Mastronardi presented a pair of bookend performances, each scoring 21 points with eight rebounds, on Friday to lift Smithsburg girls basketball team in a 65-45 victory over Catoctin. 

The Leopards remained undefeated through 16 games while dealing the Cougars (12-3) their third loss of the year. 

Bono and Mastronardi each had two 3-pointers and six steals in the game. Mastronardi got the upper hand with 5-3 in steals, while Bono got a 2-1 edge in shot blocks. 

Jayda Tyler backed the pair with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Smithsburg collected 25 steals as a team on the night.  

The Leopards try for their 17th straight win on Monday in a cross-county matchup with Williamsport. 

OTHER GIRLS BASKETBALL

Thomas Johnson 59, South Hagerstown 36 

The Rebels put up a balanced attack but it wasn’t enough to offset the Patriots’ tandem of Sophia Burgee and Leah Brown. 

South was led by Aniyah Freeman with 16 points while Khloe Terralonge and Kristen Gyamif added eight each. Brown led all scorers with 18 points and Brown had 13. 

Freeman also led South with seven rebounds and six steals, while going 6 of 7 from the foul line. 

Eliyana Barnes had four points for South. 

BOYS BASKETBALL 

Oakdale 79, North Hagerstown 45 

IJAMSVILLE, Md. – Oakdale overwhelmed North Hagerstown with a 50-point second half to pull away for a resounding victory over the Hubs. 

The Bears outscored the Hubs 28-8 in the third quarter to grab a 57-29 lead. Oakdale led by as many as 37 points in the game after a contested first quarter. 

It was North’s third straight loss after opening the season with six straight wins and owning a 8-1 mark through nine games. The Hubs are 1-3 since losing Joey Dorsey to a broken foot on Jan. 8. 

Brayden Cespedes led North with 15 points, but hit only six of 20 shots from the floor. Ja Ron Nicholson added 10 points as the Hubs’ only other scorers in double figures. Brock Lapole had eight points and 10 rebounds while Michael Bell added eight boards. 

Oakdale shot 515 from the floor – including 55% from two-point range – and had 19 assists to the Hubs’ six. 

Thomas Johnson 74, South Hagerstown 62 

Avery Cosley led South with 24 points and six rebounds, while Luke Leisinger had 14 points and three steals in the loss to TJ. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL 

Shepherd 65, Bloomsburg 54 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Elwyne Wordlaw scored 22 points to lead Shepherd past Bloomsburg on Thursday in a Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference East game.  

Wordlaw’s 14 first-half points helped Shepherd take a 35-32 advantage into the break. 

Freshman Colby White had 12 points and five boards for the Rams (11-8, 7-5), while sophomore Favor Okigweh added nine points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Brody Davis contributed nine points and five boards.  

Ries Naugle led the Huskies (5-14, 2-10) with a game-high 24 points.  

Bloomsburg rallied late in the second half to get to within two points at 52-50 with 6:30 remaining after a three-pointer by Kodi Johnson. The Rams closed the game on a 13-4 run to seal the victory. 

Shepherd shot 45.5% for the game, including 9 for 18 from three-point range. 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 

Shepherd 56, Bloomsburg 51 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa.– Junior Kara Wehner scored a game-high 15 points to lead Shepherd to a PSAC East victory over Bloomsburg on Thursday.   

It was the second straight win for the Rams (5-12, 3-9). 

Junior guard Cassidy Rhodes added 11 points, two steals, and two assists, while sophomore Lamaria Estridge had nine points, seven rebounds, and five steals.  

Kelly Leszcynski added a team-high 10 points for the Huskies (10-9, 6-6).  

Shepherd took the lead for good at 5-4 when Wehner drained a three-pointer with 7:45 left in the first quarter. The Rams led by as many as nine points in the second half. 

COLLEGE BASEBALL 

Shepherd voted to finish fifth in PSAC East  

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University was predicted to finish fifth in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Poll as East Stroudsburg was selected as the team to beat. 

East Stroudsburg sits atop the Eastern Division poll after collecting six first-place votes, with Millersville (second overall in the poll) earning a pair of first-place votes. 

Seton Hill was the coaches’ choice in the Western Division. 

The following are the projected order of finish for the league.\ 

EASTERN DIVISION (first place votes) - 1. East Stroudsburg (6), 2. Millersville (2), 3. West Chester, 4. Shippensburg, 5. Shepherd, 6. Bloomsburg, 7. Kutztown, 8. Mansfield. 

WESTERN DIVISION (first place votes) – 1. Seton Hill (6), 2. Slippery Rock (2), 3. IUP, 4. California, 5. Gannon, 6. Clarion, 7. Pitt-Johnstown, 8. Lock Haven. 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL 

Shepherd picked to be third in PSAC East  

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –Shepherd University has been picked to finish third in the Eastern Division in PSAC Preseason Poll.   

East Stroudsburg was selected as the favorite in the Eastern Division, while Slippery Rock was the choice to top the Western Division.
