CHAMBERSBURG—Franklin County Commissioners have named Alexis Pennings the November 2021 Employee of the Month. Pennings, of Hanover, has been employed with Franklin County since October 2020 and currently serves as the risk management and compliance coordinator with the Franklin County Risk Management department. November’s Employee of the Month recipient was determined by the Special Thanks and Recognition Committee, which received a total of 18 nominations for the November award, including seven for Pennings. HAGERSTOWN, MD—Sterling Financial Management’s inaugural “Vote for your Favorite Nonprofit Contest” received more than 100 votes for 35 different local nonprofit organizations found in Hagerstown, Frederick or Waynesboro, and raised $500 for the top vote-getter. Through a holiday card collection, students had an opportunity to decorate and write any positive comments in the cards that will be shared with residents in local nursing homes. WAYNESBORO—More than 300 members of American Legion Post 15 recently attended Membership Appreciation Day. “Membership Appreciation is all about what great members we have. We usually do these around the holidays, but this one is special. CHAMBERSBURG—The Franklin County Prison Board congratulates Franklin County Jail Warden Bill Bechtold and recently retired Deputy Warden James Sullen for receiving Pennsylvania Prison Wardens Association awards at the organization’s Fall Conference. Bechtold received the 2020 PPWA Warden of the Year Award. He was praised for his work to enhance both security and inmate programs, his cooperation with other facilities, for team-oriented and selfless leadership, and for his work to improve corrections across the Commonwealth. HARRISBURG—The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Route 116 (Fairfield Road) bridge replacement project. This project is located over an Unnamed Tributary to Marsh Creek in Highland Township, approximately 4 miles west of Gettysburg. The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies of the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of Route 116 over the unnamed tributary. CHAMBERSBURG—The Pennsylvania State Police are reminding Pennsylvania residents to be vigilant about scams involving peer-to-peer payment apps like Zelle, Venmo, and Cashapp. The PSP is aware of a scam specifically involving Zelle, a service offered by many financial institutions through the institution’s mobile app that allows people to send money to customers of other banks. In this scam, the fraudster sends a text message claiming to be from a bank’s fraud department stating the victim had a suspicious payment through Zelle and asking the victim to verify the transfer. SHADY GROVE—Several shifts of “elves” from the Rotary Club of Waynesboro and the Waynesboro Area Senior High School magically appeared this week to wrap 350 gifts for 171 children from 86 local families. The wrapping event, held at Hurley Auctions, followed a Rotarian shopping event. The project is in conjunction with Waynesboro Community and Human Services, which has helped identify families in need. “It’s great to be able to help Santa this way,” said Tracy Holliday, Rotary’s activity chair for Toys for Children.
