The life of a soccer defender can be a lonely one. Chances to get in the scorebook are few and far between, and often the only time the defender gets noticed is when a defensive breakdown leads to a goal for the opposing squad. But Aaron Maynard, a standout defender for the Millersville Marauders who once played for the Chambersburg Trojans, has defined how the position is played during his time on the field. The 6-foot-2, 160-pound has started in all 16 games for a Millersville defense that is allowing less than one goal per game. And while there are…

The youth football regular season has come and gone and so, too, did the opening round of the postseason last weekend. While many teams from the Local.News area saw their seasons come to an end, there are still four squads that are still alive in the postseason, and they need just two more wins to reach the top of their respective mountains. The Chambersburg Trojans have two teams still kicking in the CFA Youth Football League Federal Conference playoffs. The Chambersburg Pony team, seeded No. 3, opened with a 12-7 win over No. 6 Swatara, while the No. 2-seeded Trojans’…

The older I get the more acutely aware I become of time. And for some reason, that precious time just seems to be moving faster by the day. This is vastly different from my childhood experience growing up in the literal woods of Perry County, where the nearest kids my age were at least a 30-minute drive away. Back then, summers seemed to last for years, and I had nothing but time. One way I found to keep time humming along was TV and video games. Yes, I was binging screen time long before today’s kids made it cool! Before…

The United Recreational Soccer League and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League are down to the final weeks of play, and as the season comes down to its final act, we’ve counted at least seven Franklin County teams who are on top of their divisions. At least for now. The Waynesboro Youth Soccer Association has been especially potent in URSL, with three of its teams leading their respective divisions with undefeated records. The Warriors (3rd-4th grade), Waynesboro FC (5th grade), and Thunder (6th grade) are sporting a combined 18-0-1 record, with the teams outscoring their opponents 107-22 in the process.…

At first I thought Man Fest was a joke, but my buddy and fellow runner Matt Sharp was determined to create a tournament to determine the manliest man. And this weekend his passion project finally comes to life. Events at Man Fest will include everything from axe throwing to target shooting to arm wrestling. Almost every sport is represented in the game list, except for running, as we concluded it might not be a good idea to have this event in the same “decathlon” as beer chugging. Somehow Sharpie has lured me into believing this is a race that I…

Fall sports are well underway and the results are in: Greencastle athletes are showing up with some big performances on the collegiate stage. On the gridiron, ex-Blue Devil Nate Kirkwood is finding increasing opportunities to handle kicking duties for the Division I Navy Midshipmen. Kirkwood has been perfect on PATs and has already banged in two field goals this fall. He’s also been a weapon on the kickoff team, where he is averaging 60.9 yards per kick. In this month’s College Corner, we’ll shine the spotlight on Kirkwood and others on the football field, while also taking a look at…
