America turns 250: Planning underway around the region

As America’s 250th birthday is less than 100 days away, LocalNews1.org will share with you updates of events happening in both Washington and Franklin counties.  Here are some of the events that have been scheduled so far. 

Hagerstown:

·         Saturday, May 23– Sharpsburg Memorial Day Parade -featuring the 250th parade float. A ceremony will kick off the event at 11 a.m. in the town square in Sharpsburg. The parade will begin at 2 p.m.

·         Sunday, May 24- Boonsboro Memorial Day Parade -featuring the 250th parade float. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with a wreath laying ceremony at the World War I monument in front of Town Hall. The parade will begin at 2 p.m.  

·         FridayJuly 3- Boonsboro’s Independence Day Celebration- America & Washington County’s 250th Anniversary -The event begins at 5 p.m. with Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. and will feature music and food vendors. Lawn chairs and blankets are always welcome. The event will take place at Shafer Park, 37 Park Dr. 

·         Saturday, July 4- Washington County 250th Event -Washington County proudly celebrates its Semi-quincentennial, “offering an opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage, achievements and the birth of our nation.” The event begins at 12 p.m. and will be held at the Washington County Agricultural Center located at 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro. 

·         Sunday, July 5- Hagerstown Municipal Band and Hagerstown Choral Arts Concert – community event celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of Washington County and the United States at 7 p.m. The performance will take place at the North Hagerstown High School Auditorium and will feature the Hagerstown Municipal Band and Hagerstown Choral Arts. The program will highlight patriotic selections that offer a meaningful and festive way to mark this historic milestone. The concert is free and open to the public, and community members of all ages are encouraged to attend. No tickets are required.

Chambersburg: 

·         Saturday, April 18 – America250PA Franklin County Parade – be part of history when we celebrate America’s semi-quincentennial a parade through downtown Chambersburg. The event will take place at 15 S. Main St. and starts at 1 p.m.

·         Saturday, July 4- A Veterans Celebration – The event will take place at Memorial Park. 

Waynesboro: 

·         Friday, July 3 -Boro Bash 250 – Join us as we celebrate America’s semi-quincentennial in downtown Waynesboro! Activities will include live music, a kids zone, food trucks, historic displays and a flag ceremony, plus a special reading of The Declaration of Independence. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and will take place at the Grove/Bowersox Parking Lot on Walnut Street. Free entry – bring the whole family and celebrate as a community.
