Hiker rescued by Maryland State police chopper in 125-foot drop to cliff

HAGERSTOWN – A 60-year-old male hiker was rescued by Maryland State Police helicopter Saturday after he suffered a medical emergency while hiking at Maryland Heights Overlook cliff in Washington County. The severity of the hiker’s condition, coupled with the terrain, made the helicopter necessary.

Sgt. Tim Zendgraft said today the rescue was something the crew is trained to do. The crew positioned the chopper about 125 feet above the cliff, lowered a paramedic down, who then prepared the man for transport.

The rescue was supported by Washington County Fire and Rescue Services and Frederick County Fire and Rescue.

The hiker was then taken to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown for treatment.
