HS Football Roundup: Hubs off to 2-0 start for the first time since 2018

If you’re a fan of the North Hagerstown football squad, it’s time to party like it’s 2018.

The Hubs defeated Manchester Valley by a 33-7 score on Friday, improving to 2-0 for the first time in seven years. North Hagerstown, which went 5-5 in that 2018 season, is already thinking about another goal: Posting its first winning season since 2013.

North Hagerstown, a team that leads the Local.News1 coverage area in both scoring offense (31.0 points per game) and defense (10.5 ppg), rolled up 362 yards of offense in the win over Manchester Valley. The Hubs got 123 all-purpose yards from Michael Stewart, who caught a TD pass and recovered a fumble, while Ty Fauntleroy piled up 114 rushing yards and two TDs on 14 carries. Tai Gilliam added eight rushes for 76 yards and a TD.

North Hagerstown QB Colt Butts went for over 100 yards and threw TDs to Stewart and Garrett Forrest. The Hubs’ defense got an interception from Markie McCall and a forced fumble from Blake Custer.

The Mavericks fell to 0-2.

North Hagerstown (2-0) travels on Friday to face Thomas Johnson (1-1), a squad coming off a 56-14 loss to Oakdale.

Harrisburg 49, Chambersburg 6

Harrisburg had no problems running its undefeated record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Commonwealth Division.

The Cougars used three defensive TDs — two interception returns and one fumble return — to run away for a 42-6 lead by halftime. Chambersburg’s lone score was provided by QB Cam Green, who took over this week for Ceagan Truett, lost for the season to injury. Green found Cobe Penick for a 21-yard scoring strike.

Alex Cross registered an interception for the Trojans.

Chambersburg (2-2, 1-2) returns to action on Friday with a road game at State College (3-1, 2-1), a squad coming off a 24-14 victory over Cumberland Valley.

East Pennsboro 21, Greencastle-Antrim 12

Blake Reuter churned out his second 100-yard rushing performance of the season, but Greencastle-Antrim fell to East Pennsboro on Friday in a tightly-contested Colonial Division game.

The Blue Devils (1-3, 1-2 Colonial) recorded 252 yards of offense, including 106 rushing yards on 13 carries from Reuter. Greencastle’s feature back scored both of the Blue Devils TDs, the first of which cut East Pennsboro’s lead to one point at halftime, 7-6.

East Pennsboro (3-1, 3-0) expanded its lead with a TD in the fourth quarter, but Greencastle once again cut into the advantage, this time with a one-yard scoring plunge from Reuter. A failed two-point conversion, however, had the Blue Devils still trailing, 14-12. The Panthers scored a late TD to put the game away.

It was a frustrating final result for Greencastle, which recovered four East Pennsboro fumbles.

The Blue Devils will be aiming for their second win in three games on Friday when they host Big Spring (3-1, 1-1), a squad coming off a 37-19 victory over Milton Hershey.

Red Land 56, Waynesboro 14

Waynesboro QB Rayshawn Frazier-Hewitt delivered a pair of TD passes to Christian Munday, but it was not enough for the Tribe to keep pace with undefeated Red Land in Friday’s Mid-Penn Keystone Division game.

The Patriots (4-0, 3-0 Keystone) found themselves trailing 7-0 after Frazier-Hewitt delivered his first scoring pass to Munday, a nine-yard strike. But after a sluggish start against the Waynesboro defense, Red Land got into a rhythm and blasted ahead for a 28-7 halftime lead.

The Patriots continued to pile on the points, with the Tribe (1-3, 0-3) getting on the board once more with a 63-yard pass from Frazier-Hewitt to Munday.

Waynesboro will be aiming to right the ship on Friday, when it plays host to Palmyra (1-3, 0-3), a team coming off a 13-12 loss to Shippensburg.

Francis Scott Key 31, South Hagerstown 7

Francis Scott Key improved to 1-1 with Friday’s victory over South Hagerstown.

The Rebels (0-2) accounted for 112 yards of offense and had three turnovers.

South Hagerstown will be aiming to bounce back when it hosts Frederick (0-2), a team coming off a 40-24 loss to Smyrna.

Williamsport 47, Smithsburg 7

Smithsburg’s Dakota Sowers returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a score, but the lead didn’t last long, as Williamsport rolled off 47 unanswered points to cruise to victory on Friday.

The Wildcats (2-0) got a big day under center from QB Gabe Parker, who piled up 261 passing yards and four TDs.

The Leopards (1-1) return to the gridiron on Friday, when they play host to Berkeley Springs (2-1), a team coming off a 34-28 victory over Clear Spring.
