For most of us, a five-day trip to Florida is a vacation, but for the Chambersburg Chargers club swimming team it was something else: A business trip.
Competing at the YMCA National Long Course Championships and Time Trials in Ocala, Fla., the Chargers showcased their talents against some of the toughest swimmers in the country at the Florida Aquatic Swimming & Training facility.
Cullen McGraw and Ellery Hayes stood out for Chambersburg. Hayes captured a win in the 200 backstroke in 2:30.65 at the time trials, while McGraw secured a trio of awards stand finishes in the 800 freestyle (3rd in 8:29.33), 1,500 freestyle (3rd in 16:24.58), and 200 backstroke (2:09.25) at the long course meet.
McGraw also teamed up with Alex Kaczmark, Ethan White, and Amir Tasker to take fifth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:55.81. Kaczmark took eighth in the 400 freestyle in 4:09.70, while teammate Gabriel Kahsay added a ninth in the 200 butterfly (in 2:08.06). In addition to Hayes on the girls side, Xiomara Del Rosario landed 11th in the 50 breastroke with a time of 34.22.
The YMCA of Hagerstown Gators took on the NBAC Mid Summer Classic in St. Mary’s City, Md., with Charlotte Magaha and Addie Philp posting top finishes. Magaha, competing in the 10U division, took third in the 200 IM (3:27.34) and fourth in the 50 breaststroke (4th in 44.99). Philp swam in the 11-12 division and place fifth in the 200 butterfly in 3:16.54.
