WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team picked up where they left off last season – winning.
A season removed from a Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship and a home meet to tee off the 2022 season, Waynesboro went 6-0 at Waynesboro Country Club on Monday afternoon.
Waynesboro bested runner-up Northern York by 18 strokes and had two golfers finish in the 70s. Tyler Fortney was the medalist with a 71. Evan Stein carded a 78 to finish second overall, helping Waynesboro to a team score of 325.
Waynesboro, ever playing with the proverbial bulls-eye squarely on their backs, has gone 83-2 in the last three seasons, including 25-0 in 2021. Both losses came against Chambersburg, which no longer competes in Mid-Penn Colonial Division.
“We advanced the most players into the postseason this year with five, and we represented our division at the Mid-Penn championships where we finished fourth out of eight teams,” said Henderson.
Ella Lowry, Dylan Byers and Tyler Fortney all made it to the District 3 championships. Lowry then made it to the PIAA state championships.
Northern York ended the day with a 343, followed by Greencastle-Antrim with 348, Gettysburg with 357, Shippensburg with 379, Big Spring with 385 and James Buchanan with 447.
Northern’s Garrett White was the only other competitor to turn in a score under 80, as he finished one stroke behind Stein at 79.
Greencastle’s Ben Irr tied with Northern’s Logan White and Waynesboro’s Kellan Smith with identical scores of 81.
