Waynesboro playing opponents, weather

The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team has been playing two opponents so far in the 2022 season – other teams and the weather.

The Indians, which enter the week with a 3-1 record, were supposed to have played seven games by now. However, contests against Greencastle-Antrim and Northern York were postponed due to rain, making for a jam-packed week of April 25 on the horizon.

A home game against Harrisburg this past Friday was suspended.

In the meantime, Waynesboro absorbed its lone loss of the early season against Cedar Cliff on opening day. The Colts, 5-2 out of the gates, defeated the Tribe 4-0 on Saturday, March 26 on a cold and blustery day.

Waynesboro rebounded with three straight wins, including two against Mid-Penn Colonial Division teams. Waynesboro was leading Harrisburg, 12-1 in the bottom of the second inning when the skies opened and play was suspended.

The Indians dominated Spring Grove, 9-4, in their home opener on Friday, April 1.

Waynesboro edged West Perry, 4-3, in Elliottsburg on March 30. The Tribe followed up with an 11-1 rout of James Buchanan on April 6 in Mercersburg, giving them a 2-0 league record.

Last season, Waynesboro finished 11-3 in the conference and fell just short of a division title. That distinction was conferred on Northern York, which was slated to play Waynesboro last Thursday.

The postponements set up a very busy week for Waynesboro, which plays twice this week (at Boiling Springs on Tuesday and home against Shippensburg on Thursday).

On April 25, the defending league champion Northern York Polar Bears come south to Waynesboro for the first of two games between the two teams. The second is May 3 at Dillsburg.

The Indians play Greencastle-Antrim twice in a span of four days. On April 26, the two teams square off in Greencastle. Then, on April 30, they play again in a Saturday matchup at Tom Robinson Field.

Bookended between the games against Greencastle-Antrim and Northern York is a home game against James Buchanan on Thursday, April 28.
