Northern York surpasses Waynesboro

WAYNESBORO – It couldn’t have been closer.

One stroke. A second Northern York victory in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division golf meet.

The Polar Bears had the distinct honor of playing at Waynesboro Country Club, and, they pulled off a one-stroke win against Waynesboro. Final score : Northern York 326, Waynesboro 327.

“It was a great day, except for the fact that we lost by one stroke,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “The golf course was in excellent shape, and there are no excuses. They simply played a bit better than we did today.

“On a positive note, Tyler Fortney was a medalist again with a 75. He has been the best player in all three matches so far. Kellan (Smith) shot a solid score of 80, which is his best this season. Andrew Stoffe and Stone Tayler both shot 86 to round out our top four counting scores.”

Ironically, if Fortney matches either of his two previous scores, had he shot two strokes better, Waynesboro would be leading in the standings. Instead, it’s Northern that is 17-1 and Waynesboro that is 16-2.

The season is indeed shaping up to be a two-team race (not discounting Shippensburg checking in at 12-6) between Waynesboro and Northern.

In another irony, Northern hosts the season-ending divisional showdown when teams will play at the Bears’ home course: Range End Golf Club, Dillsburg, on Sept. 19.

As it was, Northern had two players shoot in the 70s. They were Logan White (76) and Garrett Whiter (79).

But the next two scorers shot 86 and 87, which wasn’t anything to be worried about, except that the Whites combined to score 153, compared to Fortney and Smith, who combined to score 155. It was that close until the final scorers were tallied.

Shippensburg finished only two strokes behind Waynesboro. Mason Fogelsonger led the Greyhounds with a score of 77. Teammate Ben Horgos finished at 79.

The other finishes, in order, were Gettysburg, Greencastle-Antrim, James Buchanan and Big Spring.

Colonial Division golfers will meet again on Aug. 29 at Whitetail Golf Resort in a meet hosted by James Buchanan.
