Health with Holly: Beat the heat and stay in shape this summer

Summer brings sunshine, longer days and plenty of chances to get moving. But it also brings heat, humidity and busy schedules that can make sticking to a fitness routine feel tough.

The good news? Staying active doesn’t have to mean long hours at the gym or running in the blazing sun. There are many fun, simple ways to stay in shape while enjoying everything summer has to offer. Here’s how to keep moving all summer long.

Take advantage of early mornings or evenings

Temperatures are usually cooler in the early morning or late evening. This makes it a great time for outdoor walks, bike rides or work in the garden or yard. If it’s hard to get moving alone, invite a friend or family member for a morning walk or start a small neighborhood walking group.

Try water-based activities

Swimming is not only fun but also a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints. Whether it’s at a local pool, lake or at the beach, spending time in the water helps build strength and endurance without putting stress on the body.

Water aerobics or even simply playing with your kids or grandkids in the water can also provide movement while staying cool.

Use local parks and trails

There are so many hidden gems when it comes to trails, parks and outdoor spaces. Hiking, trail walking or even a casual stroll through the park can add up to great exercise. Bringing along a pet (if allowed) or packing a picnic can turn it into a fun family outing.

Here are some of our region’s own hidden gems:

Franklin County region:

  • Cowans Gap State Park
  • Caledonia State Park
  • Mont Alto State Park
  • Norlo Park
  • Renfrew Park
  • Enoch Brown Park

Washington County region:

  • Antietam National Battlefield
  • Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
  • Greenbrier State Park
  • Washington Monument State Park
  • Hagerstown City Park
  • Fairgrounds Park
Get creative with home activities

When it’s too hot to be outside, indoor activities can fill the gap:

  • Bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks
  • Online workout videos or fitness apps
  • Dancing to favorite music
  • Simple yoga or stretching routines

These can all be done in the comfort of your home with little or no equipment.

Join community sports or events

Our region offers plenty of sports leagues, fun runs, pickleball tournaments and fitness classes. Even casual games of kickball can provide great exercise and social connection.

For those who prefer less competition, look for community events like group hikes or charity walks.

Set simple, realistic goals

Instead of aiming for big fitness milestones, set small, achievable goals. This could be walking for 20 minutes a day, joining one fitness class per week, or adding extra movement into daily routines. Tracking your progress on a calendar or in a notebook can help maintain motivation and celebrate successes.

Stay safe in the heat

No matter the activity, it’s important to stay safe during the summer heat. Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after the activity. It’s important to listen to your body. If you feel dizzy or hot, take a break and move inside.

Final thoughts

Summer is the perfect time to make fitness fun. By choosing activities that fit the season, staying safe in the heat, and setting realistic goals, staying active can feel less like a chore and more like an enjoyable part of daily life.

A little movement each day not only supports weight control and physical health but also boosts your mood and energy all summer long.
