When the week started, the Waynesboro softball team’s playoff hopes were on the verge of collapsing under the weight of a seven-game losing streak.
But just when it seemed like the curtains were going to close, the Maidens started crushing the ball.
Waynesboro went 3-0 last week, and the Maidens won big, outscoring their opponents 44-5. Waynesboro leap-frogged over three teams to move into fifth place in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division, and more importantly, surged to No. 16 in the District 3-6A power rankings. With 14 teams qualifying for the district tournament, the Maidens have plenty to play for in the weeks to come.
Greencastle-Antrim’s softball squad also went 3-0 last week and firmly controls the Colonial with an 8-0 record.
On the baseball diamond, Chambersburg snapped a seven-game losing streak by topping one of the top teams in the Commonwealth Division, Cumberland Valley, by a 7-1 score.
Smithsburg’s girls lacrosse squad secured its first win of the season last week, while South Hagerstown’s girls tennis squad had a two-win week to bounce back from its first loss of the spring.
South Hagerstown and Smithsburg had standout performances on the invitational scene last week. Competing at the Brunswick Hump Day Meet, the Rebels’ Rhianna Ignasiak ran away for wins in the 100 hurdles (16.5), 300 hurdles (55.6), and Long jump (14-8.5). Smithsburg’s Rittenhouse Shuster showcased his skills at the Under Armour Black and Blue Invitational, taking third in the triple jump with hop, skip, and leap of 43-3.25.
