The brilliant high school career of Waynesboro swimmer Eve Phillips came to an end last weekend with her final trip to Bucknell University for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A Swimming Championships.
She didn’t come home empty-handed. Phillips, committed to swim for Mount Saint Mary’s next season, splashed her way to state medals in both the 100 freestyle (3rd in 50.87) and 50 freestyle (4th in 23.37).
Chambersburg’s boys squad medaled in three individual events and a relay to secure a seventh-place team finish with 86 points. It was the highest Chambersburg has ever finished at the PIAA meet. Amir Tasker took seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.58, while eighth-place finishes were recorded by Cristian Pong (100 butterfly, 50.06) and Cullen McGraw (500 freestyle, 4:39.36). The Trojans’ 400 freestyle relay team of Alex Kaczmark, Tasker, Ethan White and McGraw teamed up for a fifth-place finish in 3:07.72.
Basketball season let out its final gasp last week, with two Local.News1 squads among those saying farewell. The Chambersburg boys went down in the second round of the PIAA Class 6A Championships with a 51-34 loss to Imhotep Charter, while Smithsburg’s girls saw their campaign come to an end with a 60-37 loss to Southern Garrett in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Class 1A State Semifinals.
Spring sports also kicked off last week with the Chambersburg boys tennis team earning a 4-1 victory over Northern.
