Smithsburg track standouts Cora Gentzel, Kayla Hawbecker, Ella Fisher, and Taylor King can now call themselves state champions after last week’s MPSSAA 1A Indoor State Championships.
Those four girls were part of the Leopards’ 4×800 relay squad that surged to state gold in 9:58.92. Thanks in part to the efforts of these girls, Smithsburg finished second out of 29 in the team standings. Gentzel also recorded runner-up finishes in the 1,600 (5:19.25) and 3,200 (12:07.08).
Smithsburg’s boys were higlighted by Dylan Herbst, who finished third in the 1,600 in 4:33.10.
Last weekend was a big one for wrestling fans, with MPSSAA and PIAA regional meets taking center stage.
The MPSSAA 2A-1A and 4A-3A West Regional tourneys featured Top 3 finishers in Smithsburg’s Rileigh Romberger (1st at 120), Isabella Cox (2nd at 130), Emmaleigh Mentzer (3rd at 115), and Samantha Nieman (3rd at 155), North Hagerstown’s Bennett Mayne (3rd at 190) and Reagan Chapin (3rd at 135), and South Hagerstown’s Grace Reynolds (3rd at 110).
Chambersburg will be sending one girl, Jessica Li, to states after she recorded a fourth-place finish at 106 pounds.
North Hagerstown’s boys basketball team captured the CMC Large School Championship last week with a 64-61 victory over Urbana. The Hubs are the No. 1 seed in the MPSSAA Class 3A West I Region Championships, while another Local.News1 squad, Smithsburg, kept its season alive in the 1A region tourney with a victory in the quarterfinals.
Chambersburg’s boys basketball team finished fourth in District 3-6A after falling 60-55 to Governor Mifflin in the third-place game. The Trojans will be playing in the PIAA Tournament this week.
Finally, last weekend’s District 3-3A Swimming Championships saw masterful performances from Waynesboro’s Eve Phillips and Chambersburg’s Alex Kaczmark. Phillips captured victory in the girls 50 freestyle (23.49) and 100 freestyle (51.88), while Kaczmark struck for double silver in the boys 200 freestyle (1:40.45) and 100 butterfly (50.26). Chambersburg’s boys just missed repeating as district champions, with the Trojans finishing as runner-up by three points behind champion Cumberland Valley.
