Last week marked the first games of the season in high school baseball and softball, and several area squads came away with victories.
Greencastle-Antrim and Smithsburg set the standard for locals in the opening week, as the baseball and softball teams from both schools are off to unbeaten starts.
Smithsburg’s track squad also kicked off its season by hosting the Charas Heurich Invitational, and the Leopard girls — the defending MPSSAA 1A state champions — cruised to the team title over the field of 14. Sprinter Jenna Howe raced to a trio of victories in the 100 (12.79), 200 (26.14), and 400 (59.37), while Kayla Hawbecker (1,600), Taylor King (300 hurdles), and the 4×100 relay squad also secured wins.
North Hagerstown’s girls finished in fifth place at the Charas Heurich Invite, with Rian Johnson (3,200), Lauren Stine (800), Aubri Gatson-Dykes (shot put), and the 4×400 relay all earning wins. The Hubs also had strong performances on the boys side with wins from Bradley Helman (800), Walker Mason (1,600), Landon Call (3200), and the 4×800 relay.
Chambersburg’s track team was also in action last week, with the Trojans cruising to a sweep over Mifflin County.
Finally, on the boys lacrosse field, Smithsburg opened its 2025 campaign with a 13-5 victory over South Hagerstown.
