Chambersburg’s dual wrestling season came to an end on the PIAA stage last week, with the Trojans falling to District 1 champion Boyertown by a 41-20 score in the opening round of states on Tuesday.
It was the final dual meet for Chambersburg head coach Matt Mentzer, who announced he will retire at the end of the postseason. In 10 years under the guidance of Mentzer, the Trojans wrestled to a 122-58 record and qualified three times for the PIAA Team Championships. Mentzer coached one state champion, Luke Nichter in 2020, and was the architect of the Trojan Wars, a tournament that has exploded in popularity in its 10 years of existence.
Chambersburg’s wrestling program had plenty more to celebrate last week as its first-year girls team finished the dual season at 11-5 after going 4-1 at the Elco Duals.
Speaking of Chambersburg, coach Shawn Shreffler’s boys basketball team extended its winning streak to five games last week. The Trojans, ranked No. 3 in District 3-6A, will play a desperate Waynesboro squad in Monday’s regular season finale. The Tribe have won seven in a row, but are still sitting one spot outside of the 16-team 6A district dance.
Waynesboro’s girls are also on the bubble, and rank No. 18 after winning two of three games last week.
Moving to the pool, Franklin County showed out at the Mid-Penn Swimming Championships last weekend. Competing in a field of 24 teams, Chambersburg’s boys finished second and the girls finished fifth, while Wayneboro’s girls finished fourth and the boys took 10th. Chambersburg’s Cristian Pong conquered both the 100 backstroke (52.30) and 100 butterfly (50.51), while teammate Amir Tasker won the 100 freestyle in 46.28.
Finally, the Smithsburg Leopards roared to two team titles at the MPSSAA 1A West Region Championships last weekend. The girls crushed the 13-team field by 60 points, got two relay wins, and individual victories from Jenna Howe (300, 42.06), Grace Ellis (500, 1:22.17), Alaina Pate (55, 7.55), and Cora Gentzel (3,200, 12:14.28). Smithsburg’s boys were highlighted by Levi Miller, who won the 300 in 37.17 and took sixth in the 55 in 6.91.
