WAYNESBORO – The wins have come few and far between for first-year head coach Casey Glunt’s varsity wrestling team.
But the regular season ended with one, as the Tribe (5-15) defeated Greencastle-Antrim, 39-18, in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet on Thursday, Jan. 23.
It was a special night, with the undefeated 1974-75 wrestling team being honored before the boys’ varsity contest. Middle school and former varsity head coach David Swink narrated a capsule of the season, which followed the undefeated season of the Waynesboro Indians varsity football team.
A select number of wrestling alums were present at the meet, including Billy Hodge, Allen Washington, Rick Swink and Dave Miller.
The full list of Waynesboro grapplers from the 1974-75 team were: Mike Bock, Dave Miller, Greg Brown, Dale Keller, Steve Curlen, Allen Washington, Ken Rook, Sid Chandler, Ed Gonzales, Billy Hodge, John McCoy, Rod Sherman, Brian Sanders, Mark Hutton, Doug Duffey, David Kline, Rick Swink, Tom Kirk, John Taylor, Jim Palmer, Mike White,, Keith Baker, Dan Kauffman, Scott Garner, Keith Reed, Don Sheffler, Joel Shatzer, Chris George, Jeff Barlup, Bill Dick, Dave Smith, Brian Smith, Don McQuait, Jay Wetherald, Geoff Goeins, Norm Price and Harmon Sites.
The team was coached by Wayne Liddick and Dave Weber.
“I think that’s important for the sport, important for the program,” said Glunt.
The rest of the evening belonged to much younger (and with more hair on their heads) wrestlers.
There were two no-contests and four forfeits, three by Greencastle-Antrim.
Waynesboro’s Brady Myers (139) and Jayden Rooney (145) started off by being on the receiving end of forfeits. Just like that, it was 12-0.
In the first contested bout, Waynesboro’s Calvin Myers (152 pounds) scored the initial takedown and worked that into a pin in 49 seconds.
Wyatt Lowens did even better than Myers. Lowens, wrestling at 160 pounds, pinned his opponent in 13 seconds to give Waynesboro a 24-0 lead.
“I think we looked good. We looked tired (the night before against Carlisle),” said Glunt. “Our objective for every match is to score points. That’s what people want to see, scoring points and winning positions.”
“Greencastle worked with us to get more matchups. They bumped 152 up to 160 and their 160 up to 172. They bumped their 127 to 133 there at the end.”
Brady Mansfield didn’t win by pin, but he did win by decision, 5-1, at 171 pounds.
Waynesboro’s Logan Smith won by forfeit at 189 pounds, making the score 33-0.
It was 39-0 when Anthony Ausherman won by fall in 1:39.
The Blue Devils won three straight matches, and Waynesboro’s Steven Howard, who won by decision, was disqualified from the contest after being called for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 133-pound bout.
Next up for Waynesboro is the Section IV-AAA tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15 at South Western High School.
