The auto racing season is both a sprint and a marathon.
On a weekly basis, drivers are putting the pedal to the metal and gunning for spots in Victory Lane. While winning is the immediate goal, consistency is the ultimate challenge.
Four area drivers — Greencastle’s DJ Myers and Cuyler Upperman, Mercersburg’s Kyle Lee, and St. Thomas’ Michael Walls — understood the assignment.
Myers won the Late Models track championship at Path Valley Speedway with 221 points, and finished in second at Port Royal Speedway with 2,860. He also factored into the points standings at Bedford Speedway with a 10th-place finish.
Upperman and Lee won their respective divisions at Hagerstown Speedway. Upperman finished on top of the Crate Late Models division with 661 points over Hagerstown’s Brady Neff (2nd, 623), Avery McMellen (4th, 545) and St. Thomas’ Mike Walls (9th, 433). Lee conquered the Late Model Sportsman division with 712 points over Greencastle’s Brian Booze (2nd, 646 points) and Brandon Bard (7th, 353), and St. Thomas’ Keith Walls (9th, 330).
Also at Hagerstown Speedway, Keith Reed (623) and Blake Reed (374) finished 2-3 in the Xtreme Stocks, while fellow Hagerstown driver Graham Brezler finished fifth in the Crown Vic division with 437 points. Alyssa Cullum, of Greencastle, took fifth with 90 points in the IMCA Racesaver Sprints division.
As for St. Thomas’ Michael Walls, he captured the Limited Late Models track championship at BAPS Motor Speedway with 1,815 points, finishing ahead of Greencastle’s Scott Palmer (1,745). St. Thomas’ Dawson Walls finished fourth with 1,505 points.
Greencastle’s Logan Jones just missed track championships at Path Valley and Winchester Speedways. A competitor in the East Coast Legends division, Jones finished runner-up with 270 points at Path Valley and took second at Winchester with 980. Other Top 5 points finishers at Path Valley include Waynesboro’s Darren Kauffman (4th in 600 Sprints), Fort Loudon’s Zach Glass (5th in 270 Sprints) and Chambersburg’s Gunnar Walls (5th in Late Models). Wesley Bonebrake, of Hagerstown, took fourth in Limited Late Models points at Winchester.
Chambersburg’s Gunnar Walls finished second in the Late Model Sportsman division at Bedford Speedway with 620 points, with Greencastle’s Brian Booze claiming fifth with 486.
Finally, National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Lance Dewease — also known as the “Fayetteville Flyer” — posted top-10 points finishes in the 410 sprints at three tracks this fall. Dewease took third at Port Royal (3,785) and fourth at Williams Grove (3,730) and currently ranks No. 7 with 750 points at BAPS Motor Speedway. Dewease’s son, Cole, took third in the 305 Sprints at Port Royal with 1,960 points.
Local auto racing is scheduled to wrap up this weekend at BAPS Motor Speedway.
