WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Buttonwood Nature Center has been awarded $35,000 from Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) through their Community Conservation Partnership Program.
The funding will support the creation of a master site plan for the continued development of the nature center, a 40-acre rural property in Washington Township, Pa. Work is underway to build a nature education center for both students and the greater Waynesboro community.
With the DCNR funding, creation of the master site plan will be guided by a professional consultant who will work with Buttonwood’s board and staff, as well as community stakeholders, to gather the components needed to create a comprehensive plan for the nature center’s ongoing development.
“The resulting published document, paired with our updated operational strategic plan, will provide a valuable tool and roadmap for Buttonwood’s staff and board as development of our nature center continues in the near, mid and long terms,” said Tracy Holliday, Buttonwood executive director.
“A master site plan will guide us well into the future as we continue to invest in improvements and special features to enhance Buttonwood’s ability to serve an appreciative community,” Holliday said.
A nonprofit organization, Buttonwood provides programming in environmental education and cultural history for area school children, plus year-round workshops, lectures, programs and community events for people of all ages.
The DCNR grant requires a 50% match, and Buttonwood is seeking funds to help make the match for what will be a $70,000 project.
