High school scores and standings from Oct. 26-31

For the first time in her career, North Hagerstown golfer Delaney Fuss qualified for the final round of the MPSSAA 4A-3A championships.

Fuss made the most of her opportunity at the tourney, held at the University of Maryland, carding an 86-86-172 to finish in a tie for eighth in the state in the girls division.

Fuss set the tone for what would be a great week for North Hagerstown sports. The Hubs not only won the 70th Hagerstown Gridiron Classic by a 49-13 score over South Hagerstown, but they also claimed the girls team championship at the Washington County cross country meet.

Led by the running of Mackenzie Philp (1st in 18:38.8), Caroline Philp (2nd in 18:47.1), Anna Ramanan (3rd in 20:08.0) and Anabelle Myers (5th in 22:43.2), North posted 17 points to easily claim the title. The boys race was dominated by Smithsburg, which ran to the team crown on the strength of top-five finishes from Dylan Herbst (1st in 16:32.0), Grayson Wynkoop (2nd in 16:43.3) and Luke Gentzel (4th in 17:41.8).

Speaking of Smithsburg, the girls soccer and flag football squads both scored big playoff wins last week. On the girls soccer pitch, the Leopards crushed Catoctin 5-1 in the 1A West II semifinals. As for the flag football squad, they edged Boonsboro 14-7 to capture the 2A-1A West I title.

Fairfield’s girls soccer squad is set to play for a District 3-1A crown this week after knocking off Delone Catholic in the semifinals.

While the postseason journey continues for some, it has drawn to a close for many others. Waynesboro’s brilliant season on the volleyball court ended in the District 3-6A quarterfinals with a 3-0 loss to No. 1-seeded Wilson, while the Greencastle field hockey squad ended with a loss in the opening round of districts. In addition, all boys soccer teams from the area have been eliminated from playoff competition.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the LocalNews1 coverage area performed last week:
