High school scores and standings from Oct. 12-17

With the fall postseason just around the corner, area high school squads are scrambling to squeeze into the bubble.

The Waynesboro volleyball team is not one of those squads. The Maidens will be a lock for the District 3-6A playoffs after finishing a championship season in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division. Chasing Waynesboro in the 6A field is Chambersburg, which holds the No. 11 spot in the 12-team bracket with two matches to play.

Qualifying for the postseason shouldn’t be a concern for the boys and girls soccer teams at Fairfield. The two Knights squads, who have combined for 22 wins this fall, are both expected to be contenders in their respective District 3-1A brackets.

The path to the postseason is simple for the boys soccer outfits at Chambersburg and Greencastle-Antrim: win and you’re in. Both the Trojans (4A) and Blue Devils (3A) are inside the bubble with just a handful of games remaining.

The same can be said for Greencastle’s field hockey team, which is clinging to a spot in the 2A postseason with two games to play.

The cross country postseason is already underway in Maryland, with Smithsburg’s boys and North Hagerstown’s girls owning the spotlight. Guided by the running of Dylan Herbst (1st in 15:45.2) and Grayson Wynkoop (4th in 16:01.5), the Leopards took second in the Small School Division at the CMC Championships on Friday. Not to be outdone, the Hubs claimed third in the Large School Division, fueled by top-10 finishes from Mackenzie Philp (1st in 17:25.6), Caroline Philp (2nd in 17:34.7) and Anna Ramanan (7th in 19:13.6).

The Mid-Penn Cross Country Championships were held in Gettysburg last weekend, with both Chambersburg squads qualifying for districts as a team. Spearheaded by the running of conference champion Natalie Quinn (18:09.18) and Lillian Spohn (10th in 19:43.91), the Trojan girls took third. Waynesboro’s Morgan Jones took fourth in 19:04.75.

As for the Chambersburg boys, they rallied behind Boston Vincenti’s 10th-place finish in 16:12.55 to take fourth in the team standings.

Finally, on the football field, Smithsburg absolutely obliterated its competition last week. The Leopards not only got a 42-13 victory from their undefeated football team, their girls flag football squad also pasted three opponents by a combined 142-7 score.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the LocalNews1 coverage area performed last week:
