High school stat leaders through Oct. 4

Donald Rivers has been a heat-seeking missile for North Hagerstown’s football squad this fall.

The 6-foot, 153-pound junior linebacker is piling up tackles at an exceptional rate — and after bringing down a dozen ballcarriers in a 17-7 win over Century last weekend — Rivers easily leads the LocalNews1.org coverage area with 68 tackles, 19 more than the next player on our list. He ranks No. 2 among his peers with four sacks.

We’ve had a lead change on our QB leaderboards, as Chambersburg’s Justin Deneen — a backup thrown to the fire after an injury to the starter — now leads the area in both passing yards (615) and TDs (5).

Smithsburg’s football squad, which improved to 5-0 last weekend, leads locally in both team offense (34.4 points per game) and defense (12.2).

On the soccer pitch, the Michael Phelan watch continues. Guiding the Fairfield boys soccer team, an outfit that leads the LN1 area in goals per game (5.25), Phelan added two more goals to his total. With 45 goals, Phelan leads Pennsylvania and ranks No. 12 in the national rankings.

Fairfield’s girls soccer team is also having its fair share of success. Gemma Phelan ranks No. 1 on our goals leaderboard with 17, five more than North Hagerstown’s Emerson Kelly, who has netted 12 goals.

Greencastle-Antrim’s field hockey team continues to set the bar for the LN1 area. The Blue Devils are tops locally in team offense (2.6 goals per game) and defense (1.2), while Natalie Medina ranks No. 1 in both goals (10) and assists (6).

Our cross country leaderboards have seen a significant shift following a speedy weekend on the racepaths at the Gettysburg and Frank Keyser invitationals. The biggest changes happened on our boys three-mile charts — topped by Smithsburg’s Dylan Herbst (15:30.3) and Grayson Wynkoop (15:55.7) — which are now populated by 10 new times.

Finally, we are thrilled to report that Waynesboro’s volleyball squad has uploaded their stats to the internet. Following the update, we’ve learned that the Maidens’ Sarah Aldrich leads the area in blocks (41), while Maddie Nystrom tops our charts in aces (27).

Our fall sports leaderboard is based on stats for the seven teams in the LocalNews1.org coverage area — Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, Chambersburg, Fairfield, North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, and Smithsburg — that have been reported to maxpreps.com, athletic.net, penntrackxc.com, and directly to LN1. Is your team not represented on our list? Shoot Andy Sandrik an email at [email protected] and point us in the right direction.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at area stat leaders through Oct. 4:
