HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Salvation Army of Washington County is seeking community support after a March fire closed its thrift store on Dual Highway, disrupting a revenue source the organization says helps sustain local programs.
A fire occurred March 13 at The Salvation Army Thrift Store, 1310 Dual Highway. The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal investigated the fire, which led to the temporary closure of the store.
The Salvation Army said the fire began in the building’s basement storage area and caused extensive smoke and water damage throughout the property. The organization said most of the store’s contents could not be salvaged.
The organization said the store is not expected to fully reopen until fall 2027 while repairs are completed. It said approximately 15 store employees were laid off following the closure.
The Salvation Army said insurance is expected to cover repairs, but the closure has left the agency without revenue generated by the thrift store. The organization said it plans to open a smaller second thrift-store location this winter as it works to restore retail operations.
The Hagerstown Salvation Army operates community programs that include food assistance and a women’s shelter. The organization said its local services also include the Manna Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry, Women’s and Children’s Shelter and Red Shield Youth Center.
According to The Salvation Army, the agency served 41,938 people in Washington County during its most recent fiscal year. The organization said it has continued operating its programs during the thrift store closure.
To help offset lost thrift-store revenue, The Salvation Army has launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign, according to the organization. The God’s Grace Fund has committed up to $50,000 in matching funds, which The Salvation Army said will match new donations dollar for dollar until the match is fully used.
