High School Scores and Standings from Sept. 7-12

Nestled within the LocalNews1.com coverage area are a handful of powerhouse cross country squads.

The only problem? These teams reside in different states and rarely get to compete against one another.

That all changed last weekend at the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devil Invitational, when Smithsburg and North Hagerstown ventured from Maryland to test their skills against their Pennsylvania counterparts, most notably one of the Mid-Penn Conference’s premier programs in Chambersburg.

Both states landed blows.

Smithsburg’s boys — the defending MPSSAA Class 1A state champions — conquered the Blue Devil Invite, defeating the Trojans for the team title by just one point. The Leopards were led by Dylan Herbst, who blasted off for victory in 18:12 on the challenging course.

Chambersburg’s girls, led by Natalie Quinn’s third-place finish in 21:23, won the team championship by nine points over the Hubs, who got a 1-2 finish from twins Caroline Philp (20:07) and Mackenzie Philp (20:13).

Elsewhere in the cross country world, Greencastle’s boys and Waynesboro’s girls are both off to 2-0 starts in Colonial Division action.

Speaking of the Colonial Division, the Blue Devils boys soccer team threw a major wrench in the division’s status quo by springing a 2-1 upset over undefeated Boiling Springs. As a result, all seven teams in the division are now within striking distance of a title.

Staying on the soccer field, the North Hagerstown (2-0) and South Hagerstown (1-0) boys are both off to unbeaten starts, as are the Smithsburg (2-0) and Hubs (1-0) girls.

North (2-0) and South (1-0) are both off to winning starts in volleyball, and the same can be said for the Hubs (1-0) and Leopards (1-0) in flag football.

The golf race for South Central Athletic Conference Division III is coming down to the wire. Fairfield and Big Spring are tied for first place with identical 37-5 records.

Finally, Smithsburg’s football squad is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2012.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News1 coverage area performed last week:
