Mud, muscle and a little mother-daughter mayhem will take over the Washington County Agricultural Education Center on Saturday, Sept. 19, when the Muddy Mamas Mud Run & Obstacle Course invites girls ages 10 and older and women of all ages to tackle 18 muddy obstacles. The empowerment-focused Quad-State event begins at 8 a.m. at 7313 Sharpsburg Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland, challenging participants to rely on teamwork, laughter and determination while supporting programs for girls. A little magic will take over downtown Waynesboro when Gals Night Out 2: Magic on Main Street brings cocktails, crafts, shopping and witchy entertainment to Main Street Park on Friday, Sept. 18. The 6-9 p.m. event at 25 E. Main St. is designed as an evening inspired by a beloved witch-themed movie classic, offering attendees a botanical cocktail or mocktail flight with a specialty margarita, supplies to make a take-home intention candle and access to a witchy, whimsical mini market. A bit of Revolutionary-era history will be served alongside tea when the Franklin County Historical Society welcomes a reenactor portraying Founding Mother Betsy Ross from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Franklin County Visitors Bureau in Chambersburg. The program will explore the more complex story behind Ross, who is often credited with making the first American flag but also defied her Quaker upbringing by eloping, made ammunition in secret during the Revolutionary War, operated a business and raised seven children after being widowed. Presented by a reenactor from Historic Philadelphia, the event will offer attendees a look at 18th-century life, the Revolutionary War, religious freedom and women’s history. Register here.
Families can make a day of it at Hagerstown City Park during the free City Park Fall Fest & Fireworks on Saturday, Sept. 19, featuring activities across six park sites and an evening fireworks display over City Park Lake. The event, hosted by the City of Hagerstown’s Parks and Recreation Division, will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 501 Virginia Ave. with pony rides, museum tours, art projects and recreation activities designed for all ages. Food, entertainment, balloon bending and face painting will continue by the lake after 4 p.m., while the new Herbstfest at the Hager House will offer German music and a nonalcoholic beer garden. Fireworks are scheduled for 7:45 p.m. The celebration is intended to give residents and visitors a free, family-friendly way to enjoy the park and welcome the fall season.
School is about to be in session — at least for puzzle fans — during the 8th Annual Puzzle Mania, a “Back to School” themed team challenge benefiting the LIU12 Franklin County Literacy Council. The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, with doors opening at noon, at the Landis-McCleaf Marine Corps League in Chambersburg. Four-person teams will take on fast-paced puzzles and school-inspired activities, including pop quizzes, brain breaks, detentions and team superlative awards, while raising money for adult education and literacy initiatives in Franklin County. Only 25 team tables are available, and organizers encourage participants to register early.
