Greencastle plans removal of unsafe sycamore tree

GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Greencastle Borough will remove one sycamore shade tree along East Baltimore Street after a certified arborist determined it had deteriorated to the point that it poses a public safety hazard, borough officials said.

The tree, located near the intersection of East Baltimore Street and North Linden Avenue, was identified during a routine evaluation of tagged sycamore trees on the corridor, according to the borough. Borough Council approved the removal after reviewing the arborist’s recommendation.

While officials said losing a prominent tree on the historic streetscape is not an easy decision, they said public safety remains the borough’s top priority. The borough said the action is intended to protect pedestrians, motorists, and nearby properties.

Bartlett Tree Experts has been approved to remove the identified tree and perform routine pruning and maintenance on the remaining sycamores along the street. The work is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6, weather permitting, and temporary traffic control will be in place during the project.

The borough said it will continue routine inspections and professional care of the remaining trees to help preserve the historic East Baltimore Street streetscape.
