WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Registration is open to join “Team Salamander” for the Salamander Scramble 5K. The race is a fundraiser for Buttonwood Nature Center and held in conjunction with Waynesboro’s Firecracker 5K on Saturday, July 4.
The race begins at 8 a.m. at the Waynesboro Area Senior High School parking lot on Second Street. Youth 12 and under may also compete in the 1-Mile Fun Run at 7:30 a.m.
Runners or walkers of any level are invited to join Team Salamander by fundraising for Buttonwood. Team members are encouraged to solicit pledges from family, friends and co-workers to raise funds for their Scramble registration fee.
“This year is our 19th annual Scramble,” said Jessica Watson, Buttonwood assistant director and event coordinator. “Our teams have included members of all ages, ranging from elite runners to those who merely stroll the 5K course.”
The entry fee for the Firecracker 5K is covered for Scramblers, and new team members receive an eco-tech, made-in-the-USA team jersey. In addition, youth and adult team members will be entered in drawings for an array of prizes.
The top fundraiser prize, an Ozark Trail four-person inflatable raft, including two oars and a hand pump, will be awarded to the Team Salamander member who raises the most funds for Buttonwood.
All team members receive prizes, plus special race-day benefits like icy cool finish line towels, a VIP tent with food and beverages, along with a one-year membership to Buttonwood Nature Center.
“And of course, our Scramblers have the good feeling of knowing that race proceeds support our mission and activities throughout the year,” said Tracy Holliday, Buttonwood executive director.
Underwriting support for this event is from Middletown Valley Bank, VIP Tent sponsor; Potomac Leasing, team prizes sponsor; and Arlene Unger, ReMax/Results, grand prize sponsor.
Additional support is provided by Today’s Horizon Fund contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation; Mary Marshall Buckey in memory of her parents, the late George and Marty Buckey; Marge Kiersz; Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson; and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin.
Individuals may also sponsor the team members, and online donations may be made through Buttonwood’s website.
