Buttonwood Nature Center offers Splash & Science summer camp for kids

Students waded and splashed in the stream at Buttonwood Nature Center during a waterways program last summer. A new Splash and Science Day Camp is scheduled on three Thursdays, June 11, July 9 and August 13, at Red Run Park.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Kids can splash in the stream and learn about local waterways during a summer day camp offered by Buttonwood Nature Center. The Splash & Science day camp will be offered on three Thursdays — June 11, July 9 and Aug. 13 — from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students may sign up for any or all sessions. Held at Red Run Park in Rouzerville, Pa., the camps are open to kids ages 7-12.

Campers will have the chance to study macroinvertebrates — tiny aquatic “critters” — up close, create a craft, and play in the stream. They’ll look for turtles, frogs, and water birds.

They will also create mosaic fish, frogs, or turtles out of air-dry clay and assorted craft supplies like beads, beans, and shells.

“Exploring the wonders of water is a great way to engage with the local environment,” said Mary Claire King, Buttonwood educator. “Plus, playing in the creek is the perfect way to beat the summer heat!”

“We’ll end the day with popsicles, the best way to end a hot summer day!” King added.

Campers should come prepared with clothing and closed-toed shoes that can get wet (or bring a second pair of socks and shoes) and a towel. Bring water, two snacks, and a packed lunch, too.

Registration for the camp is required. Camp fee: $60 for Buttonwood Nature Center members and $65 for the general public. Register online at www.buttonwoodnaturecenter.org.

This program is supported in part by Buttonwood’s Today’s Horizon Fund Contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation; Mary Marshall Buckey in memory of her parents, the late George and Marty Buckey; Marge Kiersz; Don Gibe and Nancy Erlanson; APX Enclosures; and the family of the late Carolyn Terry Eddy, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin.
