Smithsburg’s state sweep is complete.
In a school year that has already seen the Leopard boys win MPSSAA team gold in cross country and indoor track, the squad has yet another reason to celebrate after once again conquering the state, this time in outdoor track. The Leopards were led to the promised land at Monday’s MPSSAA Class A Championships on the strength of three podium finishes from Dylan Herbst in the 1,600 (2nd in 4:21.95), 3,200 (2nd in 9:39.46), and 800 (3rd in 1:57.97).
North Hagerstown’s girls also won a 3A state title, and were led by multiple wins from the freshmen Philp twins: Caroline and Mackenzie. Caroline posted victories in the 3,200 (10:44.31) and 1,600 (5:04.95), while Mackenzie surged to state gold in the 800 (2:16.65).
In Pennsylvania, the District 3 baseball and softball postseason saw one area school, Chambersburg, play for two 6A titles. The Trojans settled for silver in both sports, while Greencastle-Antrim landed 5A third-place finishes from both its baseball and softball squads. All four of these teams, as well as 1A runner-up Fairfield, will be competing at states next.
